Review on A-Top Roofing & Costruction, Manalapan NJ

Be aware of A-Top Roofing & Construction company's business conduct and practice when things goes wrong...

A-Top did a second-layer roofing on my house back in May 2005. The roof leaked after three years in 2008 from open seam between chimney meets shingles and also in Oct. 2012 after Hurricane Sandy. I didn't call A-Top when it first leaked in 2008 since the water came down from the first floor ceiling and we just had the room's 10 feet wide window replaced a week before the leaking started happening so we thought it's caused by the new window's replacement job. It never occurred to us the leaking was from the roof. We immediately called the window company to come back to re-do and re-seal that 10-feet-wide window, but even after doing that, the leaking problem continued every time it rained. So, we decided to hire a "leaking expert" Alex (so he called himself that) to figure out the cause. Alex charged us $700.00 cash for guarantee to fix the problem for good. He did kept his promise and came back several times until he found the real cause of the leaking, to which was from the open seam between chimney meets shingles. He put black tart to seal over the gap to prevent water coming down causing the leak. and took care of the problem for three years until the tart dried out and cracked again in 2011 ..... It is a long story to continue...

However, I did call A-Top immediately after Sandy on 11/8/12 when the second floor ceiling started leaking. I left a message and told them that I still had 10 year labor warranty with them on their voice mail (stupid act of me). The owner Andrew called back the next morning and told me he would get back to me until it's my turn. I called them back one week later to find out when would I get an appointment for someone to come look and fix the problem. Marsha answered the phone and was totally astonished that Andrew did not set up an appointment with me immediately when we talked the first time. She called Andrew trying to set up an appointment for me but I guessed she finally learned from Andrew that this job would not help them making any money since it's under 10 year warranty on labor. Therefore, I didn't get an appointment  for him to come look until nearly a month later.

Finally, on 12/3/12, the owner Andrew came, took some pictures, and explained to me the leaking problem was cause by aged rim of attic fan. So, it wouldn't be covered under the warranty. I then pointed out the leak from the chimney seam in 2008 due to their careless workmanship, he got very defensive and angry, acting like a child totally un-professional, saying I should have called him before having other fixed the problem. He was vigorously trying to detach his company's responsibility from repairing (for free) the poor, careless workmanship job they did 7 years ago by claiming their labor warranty was voided since I had someone else touched his roof. I understand that I made a mistake paying other to fix the terrible leak, but the leaking problem was caused by their careless workmanship of not securely seal the seam in the first place. Besides, Alex was only used black tart to patch over the open gap to prevent water coming into the house, he did not touch any shingle nor move anything else that A-Top put down. Actually, no one ever touched the roof after A-Top's work even though Andrew claimed that there's a satellite anchor nailed on top of the roof, to which the satellite was there before A-Top came to put down the new layer; it was moved to a different location and the anchor nail was left to stay.

I am waiting for Andrew to send me his estimate via email. I will update this company's business conduct a week later from 12/3 he came, and re-adjust my opinion and rating on A-Top Construction accordingly.
