Bamboozled! (But Chaperoned)

Looking to avoid the mosh pits, a mom prepares for mega music festival with four teens

Like any good mom, I wanted to give my 15-year-old daughter something she really wanted for her birthday. So what did she want to do more than anything else this weekend to celebrate? Maybe a Broadway show? A Knicks game? A day at a spa? A trip to the beach? She wanted to go to the beach all right - to Bamboozle, the three-day music festival at Asbury Park that is expected to draw 90,000 concertgoers down the shore over the weekend. A few months ago, a concert on the beach sounded like a fun and reasonable thing to do – at least one day of it – so I let her pick a day, and I offered to drive and chaperone. I didn’t really think too much about what I was getting myself into. Now it’s here, and I’m getting bulletins about traffic and how to …

POLL: Children in Tanning Salons?

A Nutley, NJ woman is charged after bringing her daughter to a tanning salon, where the 5-year old allegedly got a sunburn.

Patricia Krentcil, 44, of Nutley was charged with child endangerment after allegedly letting her 5 year-old daughter come into a tanning booth with her. Krentcil's daughter told her school nurse she got a sunburn from tanning with her mother, prompting the school to call child services. Krentcil maintains she and her daughter do visit the salon together, but the 5 year-old never enters a tanning booth. Krentcil said her daughter got a sunburn from helping in the garden on a nice weekend. "The pediatrician said that she's got a little sunburn, but it was that only weekend we were out doing the gardening," Krentcil told ABC News. Police allege Krentcil took her daughter unto the booth without tanning salon employees knowing. According to The…

POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

I have coached multiple years of baseball and softball and these prices are off base. A decent youth glove runs about $35 (Louisville Slugger, Mizuno) and you can find serviceable gloves for around $25 (Wilson). IMO the best youth gloves are in the $60-$70 range (Rawlings, Slugger, Mizuno, Wilson) and should last multiple seasons. Youth Cleats are $20 to $35 for (Nike, Mizuno, NB, Under Armour). …   more ›

Easter Decorations Decoded

Bunnies, colored eggs, and bouquets of flowers adorn your home for the holiday of Easter, but why?

When thinking about decorating your home for the Easter holiday the mind goes to bright pastels, fresh flowers, baskets full of colorful eggs, chicks and bunnies. Ever wonder how baby animals, eggs, and a mythical bunny became a part of this Christian holiday? While Easter is a celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection, it has also evolved over centuries to include pagan traditions.  The name Easter is derived from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre. The month of April was dedicated to Eostre, and the festival of Eostre was celebrated on the vernal equinox, the one day of the year when the hours of sunlight equal the hours of darkness. When English Christians were trying to convert others to their religion, they kept the name of …

Did you know that the date for Easter is determined by the lunar cycle? Look it up. PS. You can no longer use the term "Easter Bunny" in Holmdel. Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Bunny are only allowed to be used by the Obama Administration and the White House staff! …   more ›
