On May 18, the Manalapan Soccer Club and the Marlboro Soccer Association will join together for charity.
Marlboro and Manalapan Soccer Clubs are joining forces again, to compete in the second annual Coaches Classic for Charity. The May 18 event will benefit The Samaritan Center of Englishtown and The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). “Last year, Mike Hammer and Jeff Rosen came up with this great idea to have the coaches and parents from our respective clubs get together for one night to play a couple of games of soccer for two great charities and share a night of fun and laughter," Murray Karp, President of the Marlboro Soccer Association said. Snagging scholarships takes deliberate action. A collegiate athletic recruiting expert revealed how the system really works at St. John Vianney High in Holmdel Thursday night.
Ishmael Hyman, 16, of Manalapan is a lightning fast wide receiver on the St. John Vianney football team. Recently his coaches helped the junior send out an email to college coaches with a link to a highlights video he created. "As soon as we clicked "send" -- the phone calls started coming in," said Head Football Coach Andy Carlstrom. Not long after, he got offers from Rutgers, Boston College, U. Mass, and Old Dominion. His mother, Tonia, says she's learning all she can to prepare for her next move in the strategic game of college recruitment. "You've got to be the one out there. You've got to be your own advocate," she said. Which is why she, and about 100 other parents, turned out Thursday night to hear an energetic national college …

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat
Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

Let the Tebowmania begin! The highly-praised but heavily-scrutinized quarterback will be suiting up in green and white next season after being traded Wednesday to the New York Jets for two draft picks. The announcement Tuesday that former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning had officially signed with the Denver Broncos not only made the Broncos an immediate playoff contender, it also meant media darling Tim Tebow was out of a starting job. No longer the starter, rumors began to fly Tuesday night that Tebow would be traded, with the Jets considered a possible destination.
