Manalapan Defeated by South Brunswick for State Football Title

An otherwise perfect season ended in disappointment at Rutgers Saturday night

Manalapan High School's unbeaten football team took 11 straight wins into Saturday night's Group V sectional title game but fell short of the championship, losing to South Brunswick, 33-22. It was the first state football title in South Brunwick High School's history. The Vikings were powered by the efforts of Dahrae Ford, who was a workhorse for SBHS all night in a game played at Rutgers University. Ford scored three touchdowns, including an 8-yard run late in the fourth to ice the game for South Brunswick.  After jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead, Dontae Strickland made it 13-0 on a 68-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Perkowski. Manalapan answered to make it 13-6 in the second, before Ford scored his first touchdown of the night. Manalapan …

VIDEO: Local Hockey Player Makes National Highlight Reel

Junior Titan goal scorer's celebration makes news

For most athletes the dream of making it on SportsCenter is one very few will accomplish.  This weekend Junior Titan Taylor Cox got to see that dream come true, though likely not in a way he could ever have imagined. According to a story on Yahoo a goal Cox scored against the New Jersey Rockets of the American Junior Hockey League helped to land him on the national sports scene. Skating to the left of the goal at the Howell Ice World, Cox celebrated putting the puck into the net by leaping into the boards. What he never could have expected was the glass at the arena giving way as he flew through to the floor. Proving the old adage of hockey players being tough Cox can be seen bouncing right back up on his skates and walking back to his …

Manalapan Hands Middletown South Its First Loss

Middletown South could not complete its game-winning drive as Manalapan holds on for a 35-31 victory.

The Middletown South football team fell to Manalapan, 35-31, in a divisional battle between two undefeated teams Friday night. With two minutes left in regulation, Middletown South appeared poised to march down the field to win the game in thrilling fashion. With 48 seconds remaining, junior quarterback Kyle Brey connected with Eli Smith, who made a spectacular one-handed catch at around the 12-yard line, setting up a potential game-winning drive. However, on a 3rd-and-10 play with 33 seconds left, Brey fumbled the snap and Manalapan recovered to seal the victory for the Braves. “We had a chance to win the game. We had two shots at the end zone and it’s anybody’s game at that point” Middletown South head coach Steve Antonucci said. “We …

Poll: Sweeney Pushes Legislation to Spike Replacement Refs

The state Senate president says player safety and fans' investments need to be protected.

After a disastrous weekend of wrecked calls by the NFL's replacement officials —capped by a blown call to end Monday night's game between Seattle and Green Bay that resulted in a call by Packers fans to boycott the league — New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney said Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation that would nix pro games played under replacement refs in the state, citing the risk to player safety. Sweeney's move wouldn't affect the Philadelphia Eagles, but the New York Jets and Giants who play in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.    “This past weekend in the NFL has not only made a mockery of a great sport, but shined a very bright light on how important fully trained and professional officiating is to player safety,” said…

Well, you've got to give Sen. Sweeney credit. All he did was threaten to pass legislation and the NFL immediately settled the labor dispute. I'm sure Roger Goodell was shaking in his proverbial boots thinking, "No, not NJ legislation from Sen. Sweeney!! Anything but that!! Call our lawyers and tell them to give the refs anything they want!!"   more ›
