Firkser's 27 point effort powers Manalapan to Round 2 of NJSIAA Central IV Tournament against Middletown North.
WEST WINDSOR - The only regret the Braves (No. 9, 15-8) had as their bus peeled out of the West Windsor-Plainsboro North High School parking lot Monday night was not beating the Knights (No. 8, 16-9) by a greater margin. Manalapan won the opening game in their quest for the NJSIAA Central IV title by a score of 75-62. Sophomore Anthony Firkser put on a dynamic performance, grabbing the game-high with 27 points, and senior Kyle Rubbinaccio played a supporting role in the Braves victory, contributing 20 points. West Windsor's Ethan Harel notched 16 points, and Chris Okorodudu sank three 3-pointers to finish the game with a total of 13 points. Manalapan took the lead in the second quarter and stretched it to 20 points by halftime, going up 51…

Greg Baker's seven 3-pointers help Braves slay Academy Charter Panthers 81-55 on Senior Night.
The class of 2011 was determined to make their mark in what may be the last game they ever play together as Braves on the Manalapan High School basketball court. They did just that, slaying the Academy Charter Panthers by a score of 81-55 as they celebrated Senior Night Thursday evening. Co-captains Greg Baker and Kyle Rubbinaccio were responsible for 48 Braves points. Baker sank seven 3-point buckets - with five in the second quarter alone - and finished the night with a total of 25 points. Rubbinaccio fought hard to get to rebounds and came away with a 23 point performance. Matt Pflanzer also had a strong effort, contributing 11 points. Academy Charter's Keynin Morgan took the game-high with 29 points. Coach Rick Garretson made sure …

Braves take third straight; will be first Manalapan team on Shore Conference bracket since 2006.
Get your brackets ready, Manalapan. For the first time in five years, there's a spot reserved for the Braves in the Shore Conference boys basketball tournament. Manalapan (10-5 overall, 5-4 Class A North) clinched their berth in front of a hometown crowd with a 61-37 slaying of the visiting Brick Township Dragons (2-15 overall, 0-9 Class B South) Wednesday evening. Senior Kyle Rubbinaccio led the Braves with 16 points, a game-high, and was followed closely by Greg Baker, who netted 14, and Anthony Firkser and Nicky Kreiger, who both posted 12. Brick Township's James Walker scored 10 for the Dragons. This Saturday, Feb. 5, marks the cutoff date to qualify for the Shore Conference tournament. To qualify, a team must have a record of .500 or …

Manalapan catches Freehold Township in the second half to get the victory
The Manalapan Braves (8-5 overall, 4-3 Class A North) Boys Basketball team defeated the Freehold Township Patriots (6-10 overall, 2-7 Class A North) by a score of 63-51 in a 2 p.m. matinee game at Freehold Township. Kyle Rubbinaccio led the Braves with 21 points. Greg Baker added 16 points and Anthony Firkser tacked on 15 for Manalapan. Freehold Township's Casey Skievaski set the game-high with 22 points. "It was the tale of two halves," said Patriots coach Brian Golub. "We did what we wanted to do in the first half and they did what they wanted to in the second half and that was enough [for Manalapan] to win." Freehold Township aggressively campaigned for the lead through the game's first two quarters and went into halftime up 31-26. "We …

Postponed basketball game only heightens the anticipation
War has been averted, if only momentarily. A snow-covered battlefield between them, the Braves and Patriots will stay in their respective homes today rather than collide on the basketball court of the Freehold Township gymnasium. When the two teams meet tomorrow at 2p.m., a powder keg awaits. Manalapan (7-5 overall, 4-3 Class A North) needs little prodding to stoke the fire in the tribe's collective bellies. The Braves are hungry for revenge. On Jan. 3, the Patriots (6-9 overall, 2-6 Class A North) ruined their housewarming party by wrestling away a game that the Braves led by 21 points, snatching up what should have been a Manalapan victory in double-overtime. "We led most of that game and they got real tough and made good decisions and …

Braves reign on Keegan's 1000th point parade; beat Rebels 56-50
HOWELL - Rebels (3-6) senior Ryan Keegan scored his 1,000th career point and a game-high 26 points, but it was not enough to stop the Manalapan Braves (7-3), who took home their fourth straight victory by defeating the Rebels 56-50 in Howell Friday night. With four minutes remaining and Howell trailing Manalapan by only 3, Keegan finessed past the Braves defense and underhanded the ball up into the hoop for the 1,000th point of his high school basketball career, bringing the game within a point -- and to a complete halt -- as the packed gymnasium burst into an exuberant three minute celebration. Keegan acknowledged the crowd chanting his name and posed for photo ops with his mother, father, and coach as the Braves used the extended timeout…

Braves squeak by 'Stangs 53-46; Garretson: "We're a much better defensive team than we showed tonight"
The Manalapan Braves Boys Varsity Basketball team (5-3, 2-2) held on to narrowly defeat the Marlboro Mustangs (2-8) by a score of 53-46 at Manalapan High School Monday evening. Senior Kyle Rubbinaccio posted a game-high 25 points, scoring 15 in the second half, and Senior Greg Baker added 11 for the Braves. Marlboro Senior Brandon Silverstein put up 15 points for the Mustangs. The last time Manalapan and Marlboro met, on January 2, the Braves ran a 72-44 cavalcade over the Mustangs in a Matawan Husky Christmas Classic consolation game. While both Rubbinaccio and Braves coach Rick Garretson were satisfied with the final outcome of tonight's contest, they also expressed their displeasure with the Braves' defensive effort in the game. "We …

Braves trounce Eagles 71-42
MIDDLETOWN — The Manalapan Braves Boys Varsity Basketball team (4-3, 1-2) rebounded from a Jan. 3 tough home opener by defeating the Middletown South Eagles (0-5, 0-4) by a score of 71-42. Senior Kyle Rubbinaccio led the way, scoring a game-high 24 points and sophomore guard Anthony Firkser added 20 points. "[Firkser] had some great penetrations in the second half, they didn't have an answer for him going to the rim, and when they did, he found open shooters," said Coach Rick Garretson. "Nicky Kreiger buried a couple threes and really stretched the lead and helped us out." Garretson felt the team executed its plays well, and because of that, they found open players and open baskets. "Middletown played tough D, we played really tough D. We …

Patriots rally to down Braves 87-84 in double overtime
The Manalapan Braves boys basketball team squandered a 21 point lead and handed their home opener to Class A North rivals Freehold Township in a double overtime thriller that ended 87-84 Monday. "We lost our composure, we had too many turnovers," reflected Manalapan coach Rick Garretson. "We've got to take better care of the ball and we've got to make our shots and we've got to continue to play D and box out." The Braves took a 31-10 lead in the second quarter and were up 35-26 at halftime. Kyle Rubbinaccio had a 30 point night, posting 18 in the first half. Nick Kreiger added 19 points for the Braves and sank five of the team's 12 3-pointers, making four before halftime. Box Score Manalapan Team Stats Manalapan Player Stats Freehold …
