A public hearing will be held at Brookdale Community College today to solicit input for the Governor's NJ SAFE Task Force, which studies gun control, addiction, mental health and school safety. The hearing, which is open to the public, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Warner Student Life Center, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft. Parking is free in lot 7. Members of the public will be afforded the chance to offer a brief, three-minute statement on the issues of gun control, addiction, mental health and school safety, to better help the Task Force address and prevent acts of violence. Those who cannot attend can provide written submissions by emailing NJ-SAFETaskForce@njdcj.org.

Freeholder director repeated call for resignations after former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham pleaded guilty to official misconduct charges.
Tuesday's guilty plea from former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham has some calling for more financial accountability from the college's board of trustees. Burnham, 68 of Colts Neck, pleaded guilty on Tuesday before Judge Thomas F. Scully to two counts of official misconduct and one count of theft by deception. Prosecutors say Burnham used credit cards issued to him by Brookdale to purchase more than $10,000 worth of items. According to News 12, Burnham made $216,000 in his position at Brookdale. Freeholder Director John Curley, who became the community college's liaison in January, 2011, said he was the one to call attention to personal spending with college money from Burnham's office. Former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham appeared in criminal court Tuesday, accused of abusing his power as head of the county college. Burnham, 68 of Colts Neck, pleaded guilty before Judge Thomas F. Scully to two counts of official misconduct and one count of theft by deception. Prosecutors say Burnham used credit cards issued to him by Brookdale to purchase more than $10,000 worth of items. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Burnham faces a maximum of five years in prison. Although a boil water advisory remains in parts of Aberdeen, Holmdel, Highlands and Middletown, Monmouth County's community college reopened today, albeit with some restrictions.

Brookdale Community College students should be advised that summer classes are still being held this week, despite the current boil water advisory in Middletown, where the main campus is located. The school's summer camps are also open. According to Brookdale's website, the school is open but with some restrictions for the Lincroft campus (the advisory has been lifted for Long Branch and Neptune campuses). The Children's Learning Center is closed, as are the showers in the campus fitness center. The Jersey Blues Dining Room is not open to serving meals, but pre-packaged snacks will be available for purchase there, as well as at the Paddock Convenience Store and Larrison Hall. The Brookdale Performing Arts Center welcomes all to enjoy summer nights with Shakespeare this July on the Great Lawn of the community college’s campus. The Summer Shakespeare Series will perform The Merchant of Venice on the Lincroft campus’ Great Lawn throughout the month of July. All performances are free and no tickets are required and open to the community. Performances will be held at Brookdale on July 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, and at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 15 and 22 at 6 p.m. Parking is most convenient in lots one and two. For new theatergoers and those unfamiliar with the story line, this is the “Bard’s” provocative look at love, debt and justice amongst the merchants, lawyers and moneylenders in the Venice of the Renaissance. …

Brookdale Community College students, faculty and community members came out in support of a "Hoodie March" in honor of Trayvon Martin, Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Shouts of, “No justice, no peace” and “I am Trayvon,” were proclaimed as participants marched across campus. The event was sponsored by Brookdale’s Black Student Union. Following the march, participants gathered to share their thoughts during an open microphone ceremony. One after the other, students and faculty spoke their minds regarding racial profiling. In memory of Trayvon Martin, Franklyn Rother, academic division dean of social science and education, recited a personal letter given to him by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The letter spoke about the anticipation of a day where …

When the Brookdale Community College Theater Department presents The Reluctant Dragon this month, it will be with cast of local thespians, including Andrew Micolleti of Englishtown, who will be playing Grimsby, and Chelsea Demaio of Manalapan, who will be a part of the chorus. According to Brookdale, this magical, humorous story is about friendship and follows the unlikely friendship between a dragon and a young boy. Sydney is not your typical dragon as he prefers to spend his time writing poetry and doing watercolor portraits. Sydney decides to settle in the town of Guildemere where the townspeople decide to blame their dying crops and sour milk on the dragon. One boy, Glaston, however, befriends Sydney. When you are assuming the presidency of a college, there are a lot of things to consider: garnering new sources of funding, increasing enrollment, reexaming the college's policy on ice cubes. But when you are moving from a community college in Texas to Brookdale Community College here in the northeast, there are other things to do deal with as well. "I got rid of all my wool," said newly appointed Dr. Maureen Murphy, who originally hails from the mid-west. A Manalapan resident and student of Brookdale is being charged with stealing $1.80 worth of ice from the cafeteria.
Cedric Calero, an 18-year-old Manalapan resident and student at Brookdale Community College, took ice from the school cafeteria without paying for it and subsequently has been charged with a disorderly persons offense, according to News 12 New Jersey. To read the full story on News 12, click here.
