Wow, Barzillai, you have asked hard questions. I respect the role of the Freeholders in supporting the college through funding and the appointment of Trustees, to whom I will report. I look forward to building my new relationship with both the Freeholders and the Trustees; further, the Trustees and I will work collaboratively to identify Brookdale's directions in the future. I also fully …   more ›

Get Hired This Month at Brookdale Job Fair

Workshops will be held on Feb. 16 and 17 in advance of the Feb. 24 event.

Brookdale and its Long Branch satellite want to get you a job this month. On Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Brookdale Long Branch Higher Education Center, 213 Broadway, will host its annual free job fair. Last year when Brookdale Community College held the fair, some who came in jobless were snatched up by the businesses there looking to hire. Organizers are hoping that the event will be a success again this year and they are kicking it off with workshops for job hunters. Priority pass holders will be welcomed from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with open admission from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. The priority passes will be issued in advance and through program sponsors to individuals who are enrolled in a verified job readiness program or attend a resumé and…

Brookdale Plans to Decrease Tuition by 2.53%

Students could see savings in July.

Pending a hearing later this month, Brookdale students could see their tuition bills go down this summer. Brookdale Community College officials voted last night to approve the college's proposed 2013 budget, which includes a 2.53 percent decrease in tuition rates, effective July 1, 2012, according to a press release issued by the college. "In developing the budget for fiscal year 2013, we focused on one overarching principle - access and affordability for our students. The continuing economic crises and its influence on state and local resources have impacted all of us - including our students and their parents," said Dr. William Toms, interim president of Brookdale, in the release. The $3 per credit reduction in tuition will lower the …

Winners of Brookdale Wedding Cake Contest Head to States

A team from Long Branch and Middletown will represent their school at the March contest in Somerset.

Flip on the TV lately and if Toddlers and Tiaras is not lowering the bar on reality programming, you are bound to find someone in a white chef's coat sweating over a sheet of fondant that refuses to take the shape of a globe or a life-size replica of an Italian woman. In the reality television world of competition, this you can count on: There will be cursing and their will be crying, but there will be only one winner. Here, in actual reality, the bakers of tomorrow are still sweating competition, but without the cursing and the crying. At least not until the winners are announced. That's when Jo Skinner of Long Branch finally lost it. This week she and her teammate Amanda Morro of Middletown were contestants in the first round of a Skills…

5 Things to Know About a Communiversity Degree

Brookdale's Communiversity is an educational bargain for students looking for a four-year degree and even a master's.

For Meghan Fischer, of Port Monmouth, and Kevin Moedt, of Middletown, the prospect of paying for four years of college is daunting. The Middletown North High School seniors are both feeling the financial crush, so the pair turned up at Brookdale Community College last week to hear how the NJ Coastal Communiversity might ease the burden. "My parents have told me I can't take out any student loans," said Moedt, who works at the Navesink Country Club and is interested in a hospitality and tourism degree from New Jersey City University. Fischer said going away to school would be her first choice but with one parent laid off from work, a degree through the Communiversity "is a better option financially than going away." The Communiversity is a …

Brookdale to Showcase 4-Year Degrees

The community college will host an informational workshop Feb. 2 on its NJ Coastal Communiversity.

When Long Branch resident Megan Beckmann wanted to beef up her credentials in early childhood education, she knew Georgian Court University could provide her with the right classes. But instead of studying at the Lakewood University, she turned to Brookdale Community College and its NJ Coastal Communiversity, which has an alliance with five New Jersey universities.  By taking classes at Brookdale's Wall Higher Education Center, Beckmann was able to save tuition and take evening classes while maintaining her day job working with special needs children. "I liked the resources through Brookdale, and Georgian Court went above and beyond for their students there. I felt a part of the University,” Beckmann said. Three years later, Beckmann, who …

Repairs to Silence Brookdale Public Radio

Listeners of 90.5 The Night, Brookdale's public radio station, can still get their music over the Web.

People of Monmouth County, do not attempt to adjust your radio communication device. It's not an emergency. Your favorite station is just taking a break from the air waves for its annual check up. At approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Brookdale Public Radio will go off the air to allow for regular tower maintenence. Station Manager Tom Brennan said maintenence is usually done this time of year to preempt any equipment problems due to exposure on the high tower. "The electronics don't really like the weather you don't see on the ground," he said. During this time the station will not be able to broadcast its signal over the air, but will still stream its programming on its Web site. Station officials say that they expect the repairs to take…

Brookdale's Gym Is Open for You

Want to get healthy in the New Year? Comment on this story and you will get a free pass to Brookdale's new fitness center.

Our apologies to Rosemary Molten, of Colts Neck. She asked us not to tell you this Monmouth County fitness secret so her Pilates class would remain small and intimate, but we just can't keep it to ourselves. The fitness center at Brookdale Community College (BCC) is bright, airy, state-of-the art and packed with trainers better educated than us. And membership is a steal - we're talking less than $25 a month. When Patch visited the gym recently on a Monday morning, there were less than 20 people using the rows of cardio equipment that line a wall banked with floor to ceiling windows. In the adjacent weight room the handful of folks making use of the weight machines, were bathed in light streaming through the soaring windows on three sides…
