All sports hit full swing in Monmouth County high schools.
Freehold Township earned their first win this week, topping cross-town rival, Freehold Boro, 3-1, to sit at 1-4 on the season. They don't play again until after 2011 has ended. Subsequently, the Colonials lost their only game of the week, to Freehold Township, 3-1. They have had an up-and-down season so far, now holding a 2-3 record throughout the first month of the season. Brad Gardner got his first win as the Manalapan head hockey coach this week when the Braves topped the first half of a home-and-home with Toms River East, 8-7. They later lost to the Raiders, 8-6, and lost earlier in the week to Southern, 4-2, holding a record of 1-7. Marlboro got off their early season slump late last week, beating Toms River East, 7-3, but that was …

Liter: "Anything less than a Shore Conference win is just inexcusable"
You can't keep a wild horse in a stable, nevermind an entire herd of them. The Marlboro Mustangs varsity ice hockey program (No. 36, 16-1 overall, 9-0 Shore D) charged into the 2010-11 season bucking and braying, beyond bitter the Shore Conference dumped them into the "D" division, the lowest rung of the local high school hockey ladder. Sparked by the perceived injustice and the offensive artillery of senior Geoffrey Liter, junior Michael Dorfschneider, sophomore Steve Sabatini and an entire cast of talented forwards, the Mustangs have developed into a highly efficient goal-scoring machine, despite head coach Wayne Anderson's claim that his team's approach is defense-oriented. Smooth-skating senior Jonathan Weinstein wears the captain's "C…

Andy Vovk pops home 2 for Manalapan; Patriots coach Celano: "We should have had four or five more goals"
WALL - The Freehold Township Patriots (2-10-3 overall, 0-5-1 Shore B) skated to a 4-4 tie with the Manalapan Braves (2-11-3 overall, 2-5-2 Shore C) in a Sunday evening game at Gold Coast Arena. The matchup was originally scheduled for Jan. 8, but was postponed due to snow. With two minutes remaining in the game and the Patriots leading 4-3, Manalapan's Thomas Caccia got a pass through to Conor Kreppein, who chipped the puck past Freehold Township goalie Sean Heck to tie the game up at 4-4. Heck says he was interfered with on the play. "I was following the puck and all of a sudden, a guy was on top of me," said Heck. "I tried to follow the puck but when you're in the back of the net, you're not going to make the save. The ref told me that …
Mustangs riding high on eight game win streak, Braves put up strong effort against tough opponent
WALL - The Marlboro Mustangs (14-1 overall, 8-0 Shore D) boys ice hockey team prevailed over the Manalapan Braves (2-11-2 overall) with a 4-3 victory at Gold Coast Arena Saturday night. Marlboro junior Michael Dorfschneider backhanded in the game-winning goal with exactly eight minutes remaining in the third period to make the game 4-2. The Braves countered in less than a minute with a goal from Parker Gaglione, but were unable to tie the game up before the final buzzer. "They came out stronger than we expected," said Marlboro senior Geoff Liter, who assisted on three Mustangs goals. "Honestly, we thought it was going to be a little bit of a walk in the park because of their record, but they proved us wrong. They're a better team than …

Colonials defeat Braves 4-1, Caccia's goal streak ends at 16
WALL - The Manalapan Braves (2-10-2) Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team lost to the Freehold Borough Colonials (7-6-1) by a score of 4-1 in a Shore C contest at Gold Coast Arena Tuesday evening. Colonials Senior and Captain Charlie Morton scored 3 for the hat trick and Junior goaltender Cody Reilly made 50 saves. Junior Frank Santore had the lone goal for Manalapan, assisted by Sophomores Thomas Caccia and Andy Vovk. Caccia, who had scored a goal in every game the Braves have played in the 2010-11 season, saw his goal streak snapped at 16. With the assist, Caccia has scored at least a point in all 17 Braves games. "We don't like them, they don't like us," Morton said of the rivalry. Caccia countered. "I don't like any of those kids on that team …

Manalapan 2. Southern Regional 2. Caccia extends goal-a-game streak to 16
WALL - The Manalapan Braves (2-9-2) boys varsity ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with the Southern Regional Rams (6-3-1) in a Shore Conference division C matchup at Gold Coast Arena Saturday night. Manalapan jumped out to a 2-1 lead late in the second and hung on through most of the third period, but with 1:39 left in the game, Southern Regional knotted the game at 2-2. Shore Conference rules do not call for an overtime or a shootout in the case of a tie. Freshman Michael Lisciandro opened up the scoring for the Braves five minutes into the second period, pouncing on a rebound and firing it through the five-hole of Southern sophomore goalie Kyle Pinder to even the game up 1-1. With 1:46 remaining in the second, sophomores Andy Vovk and…

Braves massacred by Warriors 13-3; Sophomore Caccia scores in 15th straight
WALL - The Manalapan Braves Ice Hockey team (2-9-1) suffered a 13-3 loss to the Manasquan Warriors (5-4-1) in a Shore Conference Class C game at Gold Coast Arena Saturday night. Shore area leading scorer Connor Grogan maintained his title with a Texas hat trick, punching in four goals for the Warriors. Thomas Caccia registered a goal and an assist for the Braves. Manalapan coach David Grippo chalked the shellacking up to the growing pains of a young team. "We only have 3 seniors out on the ice," Grippo said. "We have kids playing in positions that normally don't play that position. You can't teach or coach our lack of experience. You need to get it out there. So we're going to take our lumps this season and we're going to keep plugging …

Frozen Roses take early lead, Braves don't quit; Caccia strikes again
WALL - The Manalapan Braves Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team (2-8-1) scored two goals in the third period but were unable to surmount a four-goal deficit to fall 5-3 to the St. Rose Frozen Roses (7-3-1) at Gold Coast Arena Friday night. St. Rose's Bill Regan notched four points on the night (3 goals, 1 assist) and picked up his fourth hat trick in five games. The Frozen Roses struck early, besetting the Braves with a 4-0 mess to clean up near the end of the second period. St. Rose coach Pete O'Neill attributed his team's early success to exploiting the Braves' fledgling defensive corps and cycling the puck deep in the Manalapan zone. "[Manalapan Head Coach David Grippo] has some guys playing defense who have never played there and we kind of …

Braves coach Grippo hopeful despite 6-2 loss
RED BANK -- The Manalapan Braves Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team (2-7-1 ) held the Rumson Fair-Haven Bulldogs (4-1-0) to a 1-1 tie for the game's first 29 minutes before allowing three goals within the last minute and 15 seconds of the second period, falling 6-2 at Red Bank Armory Ice Complex Monday night. Despite the loss, Manalapan head coach David Grippo says he is hopeful for the season ahead. "I tell you what, Dan Fernandes, John Caballero, they came to play. They hustle, they give you every single thing that they have. Thomas Caccia continues to be our goalscorer, putting the puck in the net... we're young and we're learning as a team."
