Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) has begun construction of an Englishtown-Manalapan transmission line upgrade which will be done within an existing JCP&L transmission corridor. The three mile upgrade also includes the removal of an 115kV line and the construction of a new 230 kV line, the Manalapan Township Committee has reported. The purpose of this upgrade is to improve the lasting reliability of the electric system in the region. Homeowners near the construction area will be notified; construction should begin this week. This committee will help Manalapan be proactive in the event of a major power outage.
The Manalapan Township Committee will be forming a Utilities Committee that will have an ongoing communication with Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) and New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG). Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen proposed the idea at last week’s Township Committee meeting and it was unanimously approved by her colleagues. JCP&L Manalapan representative Gerry Ricciardi will be going over the Township’s grids and meet with the Mayor in December. …

JCP&L is getting ready for Hurricane Sandy, with extra staff on standby and a lot of lessons learned. JCP&L clearly has not forgotten the criticism it took after Tropical Storm Irene ravaged New Jersey in August 2011. Utility officials learned from it, made a wide array of improvements in technology, communications and planning and they're ready to put that to the test, said JCP&L spokesman Ron Morano. "We've made improvements to how we provide customer information," Morano said, adding the company is doing all it can to prepare for Sandy and to plan on how to keep officials and residents informed and well-served. For starters, JCP&L is doing what everyone else is doing: closely watching weather forecasts, trying to figure out when and …
