Susan Cohen was named the Mayor of Manalapan Township for the second year in a row at the Township Committee Reorganization meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Township Committeeman Ryan Green, who was sworn in to the municipal government last night for another 3-year term by District 12 Assemblyman Rob Clifton, nominated Cohen. “As we all know, 2012 was an eventful year for our state as we faced the extraordinary challenges brought on by Hurricane Sandy,” Green said. “Susan Cohen stepped up to those challenges in an extraordinary way as mayor which is why the Township Committee has decided she should have another go at it.” The Township Committee unanimously approved the motion to appoint Cohen as mayor of Manalapan for 2013. The Brennan Stand’s Alone Foundation, 180 Turning Lives Around, Manalapan Arts Council and the Governor and Mary Pat Christie’s Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund also received donations.
The Manalapan Mayor’s Charity Ball, which was held at the Grand Marquis in Old Bridge on Oct. 20, raised funds for a variety of worthwhile foundations and the checks Donations from the Charity Ball were distributed to the Samaritan Center, Brennan Stand’s Alone Foundation, 180 Turning Lives Around, Manalapan Arts Council and the Governor and Mary Pat Christie’s Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. The Manalapan Township Committee meeting Wednesday was full of gratitude as Mayor Susan Cohen thanked all that helped after Hurricane Sandy.
The Manalapan Mayor and Township Committee officially thanked over 450 people, businesses, agencies and organizations for their help within the community during and after Hurricane Sandy. An overwhelming number of official Township proclamations were handed out at the Township Committee meeting Wednesday night as Mayor Susan Cohen read off the names of the people who contributed during the storm. Cohen said a special thank you to Eric Friedland of Wegmans in Manalapan, which was extremely helpful and generous during the unprecedented storm. “Wegmans went above and beyond. This committee will help Manalapan be proactive in the event of a major power outage.
The Manalapan Township Committee will be forming a Utilities Committee that will have an ongoing communication with Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) and New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG). Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen proposed the idea at last week’s Township Committee meeting and it was unanimously approved by her colleagues. In light of Hurricane Sandy, Cohen said that this committee will ensure that there is an open dialogue between the Township and JCP&L and NJNG in order to deal with any issues that emerge, along with having the town be proactive. “I think that we need to look into our infrastructure,” Cohen said. Here are Mayor Cohen's answers: Q: What are we planning on doing about the drug problem at Manalapan High School? A: Unfortunately, drugs have been a problem in schools since I went to High School over 30 plus years ago. I know that our police department has been very responsive and our new Chief of Police, Christopher Marsala and all our police officers work as closely with the school as possible. After consulting with the Chief he said that the police hands are tied regarding the enforcement activities in a school setting.
