RED BANK - Scorn transformed into jubilation Saturday night as the Marlboro Mustangs traded in their dunce caps for a crown, trampling over the Manasquan Warriors with a 4-1 victory in the Shore Conference's Dowd Cup Final at Red Bank Armory. The championship marks Marlboro ice hockey's first, acheived in only their third year as a program. Junior Michael Dorfschneider scored two goals for the Mustangs, including the game-winner, and senior Geoff Liter posted a three point night with a goal and two assists. You can't keep a wild horse in a stable, nevermind an entire herd of them. The Marlboro Mustangs varsity ice hockey program (No. 36, 16-1 overall, 9-0 Shore D) charged into the 2010-11 season bucking and braying, beyond bitter the Shore Conference dumped them into the "D" division, the lowest rung of the local high school hockey ladder. Manalapan grabs early lead and lays siege to neighboring Marlboro 68-47. Longtime basketball friends turn foes on court.
MARLBORO - The Manalapan Braves (11-5 overall, 6-4 Class A North) boys basketball team invaded their neighbor's gym and besieged it Thursday evening, running through the Marlboro Mustangs (3-14 overall, 1-9 Class A North) and tearing out a 68-47 victory. Kyle Rubbinaccio snatched the game-high with 23 points. Nicky Krieger launched three 3-point bombs and tallied 11 points on the night. Jon Bobrow led the Marlboro counterattack with 11. The win marked the fourth consecutive victory for the Braves. WALL - The Jackson Liberty Lions (#117, 3-10-1 overall, 3-5 Shore D) met the Manalapan Braves (#115, 2-11-4 overall, 2-5-2 Shore C) on the ice for a nondivisional contest that resulted in a 4-4 tie at Gold Coast Arena Tuesday evening. Lions captain Dylan Moschetti notched 4 goals on the evening and got good support from linemates Vitaly Bogatkevich and Jake Van Dright, who each had 2 assists. Manalapan's Thomas Caccia netted 2 goals. Parker Gaglione and Frank Santore also scored for the Braves. Gaglione's goal was his third in three games. Geoff Liter scores 2 goals and 5 assists, Alan Feld nabs shutout; Mustangs win ninth straight
WALL - Senior Geoff Liter became the first player in Marlboro High School hockey history to score 100 career points as he led the Mustangs (15-1 overall, 9-0 Shore D) in a 10-0 romp over the St. Rose Frozen Roses (9-6-2 overall, 2-4-2 Shore D) in a Shore Conference D division matchup at Gold Coast Arena Tuesday night. Liter (pronounced "lee-ter," like the unit of liquid measurement) picked up points on 7 of the 10 Marlboro goals, scoring 2 goals and 5 assists. WALL - The Marlboro Mustangs (14-1 overall, 8-0 Shore D) boys ice hockey team prevailed over the Manalapan Braves (2-11-2 overall) with a 4-3 victory at Gold Coast Arena Saturday night. Marlboro junior Michael Dorfschneider backhanded in the game-winning goal with exactly eight minutes remaining in the third period to make the game 4-2. The Braves countered in less than a minute with a goal from Parker Gaglione, but were unable to tie the game up before the final buzzer. Braves squeak by 'Stangs 53-46; Garretson: "We're a much better defensive team than we showed tonight"
The Manalapan Braves Boys Varsity Basketball team (5-3, 2-2) held on to narrowly defeat the Marlboro Mustangs (2-8) by a score of 53-46 at Manalapan High School Monday evening. Senior Kyle Rubbinaccio posted a game-high 25 points, scoring 15 in the second half, and Senior Greg Baker added 11 for the Braves. Marlboro Senior Brandon Silverstein put up 15 points for the Mustangs. The last time Manalapan and Marlboro met, on January 2, the Braves ran a 72-44 cavalcade over the Mustangs in a Matawan Husky Christmas Classic consolation game.
