Greetings from Puerto Rico. I have been a resident of Woodbury for 18 years and moved here 5 weeks ago. My husband, Rick, is a school teacher for the DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Admin). This is an offer we took for a year to experience the heritage, wildlife, rich scenery and dramatic Atlantic coastline. We dragged 3 children (2 ten year olds and one 7 year old) as well as two elderly cats; with one suitcase each. I'm looking for the history hidden in the landscapes of PR in order to become as knowledgeable as I can; in the most entertaining way. This adventure and a willingness to try new things is an effort that comes somewhat easily for Rick and I, with the exception of missing our friends & acquaintances. For the children it is an effort to overcome personal fears - but we are trying to provide a soft landing when those close friendships don't form as fast as wee ones hope. I emigrated from Ireland to MN in 1989 & wed to Rick 21 years ago. My love affair is with food. As a child, I enjoyed mixing, measuring, and licking bowls more than playing with dolls or swing sets. And instead of reading fairy tales I read cookbooks as a youngster. My favorite pastime was to read fantastic desserts made with masses of eggs, butter, sugar, and chocolate. Somehow it was (& still is) just as satisfying as eating. I worked for the University of MN more than 15 years ago and, more recently, left my job at Woodbury Senior Living to join my husband in Puerto Rico. I currently work at Ramey School, PR, helping 3rd Graders read and 4th Graders with creative writing. We live in an eccentric little town called Isabela along the NW coast. Here, weekends are for those who fancy dancing to Salsa and the melodies of Puerto Rican music as well as Puerto Rican beer and coffee -- in this friendly & scenic Isabela town. Along the way, I hope to adopt a wealth of knowledge. I’m looking forward to seeing what Puerto Rican influence may come to life for us & sharing memorable meals and times at some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen, with natives - lucky me! And, writing about it brings accountability to the way of mindful thinking. Hey, surfers are out at the beach as early at 6am here as we head to school. I look forward to sharing how we are satisfying our yang for seeing faraway sunny places, having a taste of the Caribbean with the flair of being in the United States.
